Atoms of low density Mercury (Hg) gas are excited and emit radiation when they return to lower energy levels. The line pattern of Mercury consists
primarily of green and blue emission lines so the color appears distinctly "bluish". As the human eye is not particularly sensitive to blue-violet, people often complain of
focusing, color rendition and headache problems when viewing scenes illuminated by Mercury lamps.
