The spectrum of a galaxy is formed by the combined light of all its stars and gas clouds.
Spiral galaxies contain many hot, bright young stars and a lot of gas clouds. The stars combine to produce the continuous part of the spectrum
(including a few absorption lines) while the H II regions associated with the gas clouds provide the bright emission lines (compare the
emission lines seen above to the spectrum of an emission nebula).
